Welcome!

Welcome to the UW Shellfish Farm blog,

My name is Raye Evrard and I am part of a team at the University of Washington working to construct a shellfish farm at a UW research site on Hood Canal.

Our goals are to provide a space for UW students to gain hands-on exposure to sustainable aquaculture, while creating an exciting platform for education and outreach programs in the aquatic sciences at UW.

The ability to minimize environmental impacts of a rapidly-expanding shellfish industry requires collaboration between academia and shellfish growers. By combining hands-on exposure to aquatic farming with education and outreach on issues like aquaculture-ecosystem interactions and estuarine health, we aim to foster a nuanced understanding of the current biological and regulatory environment surrounding seafood production in the region.

This blog will detail our efforts to work through the planning and permitting process in Washington. By live-blogging our progress, we also hope to provide a helpful resource to other individuals interested in pursuing aquaculture ventures locally.

Feel free to contact me with tips, questions or, comments at rayeo@uw.edu

Best,

Raye
